The Future Now

This morning, as I walked to work, I took out a pair of headphones and pulled up an episode of "My Little Ponies: Friendship Is Magic" to watch while I was walking.

I thought about two things while I did this. First, I'm kinda old for this cartoon.

Second: that watching cartoons while walking is exactly what my ten year-old self thought the future ought to include. Inside of me, she's smiling.

The other day for some reason, I was thinking back to being a kid in the 80s, and a suddenly remembered just how much everyone smoked back then. Like, it was a constant everywhere. I hadn't realized just how drastic the difference was to the present day until I really gave it some thought. I guess it happened so gradually that I never even noticed.

I've had surprisingly few friends who smoke, so I haven't noticed the drop in "individuals who smoke" so much. But I did notice how nice it was to have smoke-free public places, like restaurants and malls and workplaces. In the 90s everyone smoked at my workplace, and it reeked of smoke -- I worked third shift alone, and could still smell it from the 1st and 2nd shifts. Many of my co-workers at the bank are smokers too, but since the bank is smoke-free, it's a lot less conspicuous to me.
