Even when I was a teen, I never have been one to get a crush on an actor or a rockstar, though I tried a couple of times. But I sometimes fell in love with fictional characters. I remember being absolutely crazy about KITT, from the dreadful 80's show "Knightrider", with his sleek black shape and oh, that wonderful voice. And Morgan, from Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books, back when they were a trilogy and not a series. Those were the most memorable ones, but there are more. I know I've got a soft spot for some of Diana Wynne Jones' protagonists, like the Wizard Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, and Chrestomanci from Charmed Life. There were doubtless more, a unicorn or dragon or cat that I really adored and wanted for my own, in some platonic yet no less passionate way.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, and I'm curious: who else among you has harbored a longing for some fictional person or entity? Which ones?

I don't think I have the courage or the memory to list them all, but yes. Even when I'm attracted to celebrities, it's almost always in connection with a particular character, and I'm not as attracted either when seeing they in rl interviews or when they play other non-crush personas.

I can also crush on PC and NPC characters in games and not be interested at all in the RL counterparts.

So, umm, you're not alone. Though you're more courageous in terms of listing the actual ones. :-D

There was this tiefling thief in Planescape:Torment that I was overly fond of. And Jaheira, from Baldur's Gate. Jaheira taught me the meaning of True Neutral. >:)

And even if it were, I believe it's a sin I could bear. Quite happily, too. >;D

I had a soft spot for Mrs. Brisby of NIMH fame. :)

Odd note:
I once had dinner with William Daniels (Voice of KITT) at his house in California. (I was on an internship program at the JPL and his son Rob was one of my hall mates in college.

Nice folks, but I was embarrassed to admit, I hadn't seen him in Anything at the time. (That, and he made the most spicey spaghetti I'd ever tried to swallow.)

But to try to answer your topic, I can't really say I've had crushes on fictional characters *that I remember*. I do vaguely remember being fascinated by Julie Newmar from Batman, but... I was like... seven years old...?

If I recall correctly, I've seen him in a couple episodes of the old Rockford Files. I gather he was a doctor on St. Elsewhere, but I never watched that.

For me, it was embarrassing, because I knew he was a famous actor, but I'd never seen anything he was in. Also, at the time, I was a lot more shy than I am now. (Though, in truth, I'm still fairly shy anyway.)

Anyway, he was a gracious host. :)

*chuckle*

I've had one or two embarrassments like that, where my lack of television has caused me to be unaware of (or at least unfamiliar with) a new friend's performances. It worked out the other way one time, though, when I met John de Lancie and we talked about his Shakespearean roles rather than that "Q" thing.

But I remember, many decades ago, being quite fond of Diana Rigg as "Emma Peel" from The Avengers and later "Mrs. James Bond" from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

But much more recently, there are fictional characters that I've been fond enough of to write extensively about -- and one of them, "Dr. Jenny Curtis" -- was created by you.

And I'm still rather fond of Eve from WALL•E, and have tried to tell her story.

Not quite...

...but I definitely have strong feelings for characters. One time, I was reading a book by one of my favorite authors (staying vague to avoid spoilers). It was a good book, but he normally totally isolates his various works. Well, suddenly about 2/3 way through the book, in strides one of the heroes and his wife from the author's most popular, arguably best work. I still remember the surge of euphoria. Like "zomg, I thought I'd never see you again" sort of reaction.

And definitely during Babylon 5, Buffy and Angel there have been times I have felt as concerned or engaged with the story the characters were experiencing as much as the more mundane but still gripping events that envelop my RL friends. Unexpected bursts of character development or coping with tragedy or sorrow seemed to be major moments.

For example, I really wanted to comfort Anya in Buffy when she was going through the death of Buffy's mom with the others. Anya, being a demon for over a millenia with essentially no knowledge of humanity, is a bit puzzled by the whole process. Very earnest, and truly concerned for her friends and sad at the death. Regardless, she's an alien in the situation. They found a quiet poignant way to underscore how much so...I wanted to say "It's ok. It doesn't make sense. That's just how it is a lot of the time. Sometimes you get stuck having to feel stuff even when its not connected to any effect."

KITT. I'll admit he had a magnificent (and androgynous) voice :)

I know you're trying to avoid spoilers but could you share the author's name? I'm always looking for new (to me) good authors.

As an aside...

The chars I've had the strongest feelings for lately were Brienne and Arya from Song of Ice and Fire. After what befell them (particularly Brienne) in the last book I remember just being stunned in RL and feeling mild shock. I didn't feel that when an uncle I liked killed himself, I'm sad to say....of course, he wasn't as much like I aspire to be as those two chars, but still....

I always really wanted my own Luck Dragon (a la Neverending Story) as a kid. As a teenager, my big dream was to have my own dragon to ride on (and make love to, oddly enough) but that was clearly influenced by the writings of Shirley Rosseau Murphy and Anne MacCaffery. ;D

I always liked the fire lizards. The dragons seemed like they'd be too much trouble to feed.

I was watching a documentary a few days ago on Komodo dragons, and discovered that some researchers have tamed them so well that they genuinely enjoyed interacting with humans, and were quite happy to get scratched on the back of the head. I thought of you. ];-)

It might be a bit much to ask; Komodos these days only go about 200 pounds. Hmm; that's my weight.

Not too long ago, and overlapping with the human occupation of Australia, the Komodo's cousin Megalania prisca -- so far, we've found them at 23 feet long and they would have weighed in the thousands of pounds.

Note the flattened dorsal area, well-suited to saddles.
