The significance of the date: Ubersoft had been doing a series of strips about betatesting a new game. On Tuesday, the strip involved everyone starting up the game, and this causing an apparent power failure. On Thursday, the characters are all still in the dark.
On Thursday night, in real life, much of the Northeastern power grid, including almost all of NY state and parts of Canada, went down.
I found the timing amusing, as did the cartoonist, who worked it into Friday's strip.
