Good things
Mar. 6th, 2013 07:12 pmI haven't done this for a while so I'm just going to do an arbitrary number of them.
1. I got the most adorable card from LadyPeregrine in the mail. ♥
2. Terry and I went back to Alderaan in SW:tOR to do the bonus series, and I'm glad because Alderaan is the prettiest planet. At one point I stopped on one of the bridges and just looked out at the snow-capped mountains and the fir trees and the river for a few moments. Pity Darth Vader blows it all up, really.
3. I am still all excited about writing my current story, to the point of wanting to get up in the morning so I can go write. To the point of "I don't want to make this list because it's time I could be writing fiction".
4. I caught one of Tod's art streams and now I want to draw adorable cartoon animals.
5. Tuftears and Terrycloth. ♥
6. The Month of Letters is over but I'm still writing letters (not everyday). Because it's fun!
7. Lots or boardgaming with Lut, Fred and Sev on Saturday! Including Seven Wonders (one of my favorite games) and Shipyard and three new games I don't remember because I didn't write their names down at the time. Oops.

Have you ever played Civilization, the Avalon Hill version?
Oh gosh yes, but not in twenty years. I still have my copy of it, though. And a blown-up photocopied version of the expansion map because I was too poor to buy the expansion back then. I loved that game sooooo much, and it took sooooo long to play. I remember starting a game at 10PM with my friends one night, and not finishing 'til the sun rose.

[re: Civ] Oh gosh yes, but not in twenty years.
Ok, so here's what's going to happen. I'm going to show up at your place tomorrow, we're going to round up everyone you know, we're going to chain them to a (large) table, we're going to play some Civ, and we're going to have the time of our lives. And I'll bring the Advanced Civ expansion! (Map, new cards, etc)
(irony: These days, I'm not sure I could actually focus long enough to play an entire game)
I haven't played Civ in a pretty similar amount of time. Unfortunately, it's just really hard to find people that both enjoy that type of game, and don't mind that the games tend to be very, very long. Being a major introvert with a pretty small number of actual friends probably doesn't help that, heh. And (of course) when I have found folks to play, I always seemed to end up with one person that never even thought about what they were going to do until it was ACTUALLY THEIR TURN, which is just... painful.
I figure I've probably actually played it less than 20 times. Possibly much less than 20 times. But I loves it sooo much. My precious!
I wish someone would make a faithful computer version of it. I think it could work pretty damned well on, say, an iPad, even. Not quite as good as the real thing (because, face it, that board gets dense after a while), but it would at least let the scattered people that really like the game have more of a chance to play!
There was actually an official computer game some 15 years or so ago. It actually wasn't bad, but the multiplayer on it was basically "play by mail" .. you mailed a file around to people and they did their action and mailed the file on, so suddenly games could take months. That just didn't work well. And with computer power and monitor resolutions at the time, it did have limitations.
Someone also worked on a version in a kind of "board game construction set" framework that's around out there, but it didn't work very well the last time I poked at it, and didn't seem to be making any progress. I should check into that again.
Anyhow, yes, totally love Civ. And at least now I know I'm not completely alone in that. :)
