NoNaNoWriMo

I'd been planning to do Nanowrimo this year -- I was even writing a post about how I was going to do it -- but as I wrote it, I was listing off the reasons the timing was terrible:

1) I haven't finished A Rational Arrangement yet (probably 15-25k from the end at this point).
2) I'm going to be out of town from 11/1 to 11/6 (visiting terrycloth in Seattle, if any Seattle folks want to meet up!) so not writing then.
3) Contra is the weekend I get back, so not much writing then either. Which makes Novemember more like a 22 day month for writing purposes.

And then Lut commented that he doesn't like it when I do Nanowrimo because I disappear for a month into writing and stressing about word count.

And I realized the only reason I was going to do it is:

1) A bunch of my friends are.

...

I didn't even *like* doing Nano the one year I did it, and I never finished the book I got to 50k on then. (In 2007).

So. Never mind. I'm just gonna finish RA at my current pace of 5k or so a week and decide whatever comes next after that.

To all you people doing Nano: good luck and have fun! Maybe some year it'll seem like an actual good idea for me to do it again myself. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying it! :) It'd be silly to put it aside now, because the denouement of a romance is my favorite part, and it's fairly easy to write at this stage. I was (briefly) considering "finish it and work on something else afterwards, for a total of 50k" as my Nano goal. But I wasn't looking forward to the grind of finding a couple of solid hours every day to write even then, and it wouldn't be a "proper" Nano (whatever that is).

If I wanted to seriously commit to a writing goal that was actually achievable by me I could try to do 20k words in November...

But I won't because I'd rather be doing other stuff.

"I won't because I'd rather be doing other stuff" sums it up for me. Yeah, if I stopped gaming in the evenings and quit FlightRising, I could write 50k in a month. But I wouldn't enjoy it, and "enjoying it" is, if not half the point, at least a good-sized fraction of it.

I think copy-pasting to pad your word count is against the rules.

Slacking is good! You can consider this NaNoWriYeah for having taken the year to write the novel. ;)

Heeheehee! Before 2007, I would say the reason I didn't do Nano was because I already *was* actively working on a book, and so did not need to prove I was serious about it. :)

Lately lots of people who regularly write books do Nano anyway, though, so "because it's for people who keep saying they're going to write a novel and don't start" is no longer applicable. :)

I'm not going to be doing Nanowrimo, but I may use it as an excuse to write a few shorts. I don't exercise my writing often enough.

"Fun" is the only real reason to do it anyway. If it's not handy and fun, by all means skip it. I've been a member on NaNoWriMo for five years and this is the first time I'm actually doing it. :)

Ha ha ha this post actually inspired me to sign up for NaNoWriMo - although I am a "Rebel" - not working on a novel; I'm going to get all these fic WIPs written/drafted/finished/what-have-you. Now to stop talking about it and start writing. Oh boy!
