[livejournal.com profile] terrycloth didn't do an MLP post! I had to get my "MLP exists" reminder from @BroniesForRonPaul. What's the world coming to?

Anyway, the moral for this week was "If you're born into a race with a culture of delinquency, crime, and general jerkishness, your only hope is to be adopted by a good race and spend your life acting like a member of your adopted culture". Also, it's okay to stalk your friends. And if you accidentally steal someone's baby, the right thing to do is raise it yourself.

... I don't think the writers really think this stuff all the way through.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt a bit disturbed by this. I was half-expecting for them to reveal, "Hey, dragons aren't really that bad after all. They're just misunderstood or different or something." That, even though it was kind of implied that Spyke only stays cute and nice so long as he doesn't get too much STUFF (which makes him grow up and become more dragon-like, which is inherently bad ... which is kind of disturbing).

And then ... boy, it's harsh being a predator in this universe! Every animal is intelligent/sapient, it seems (even those who can't talk), so being a carnivore is evil. But then, that's a problem that's cropped up in many anthropomorphic/talking-animal settings. (That this trope is "averted" in Disney's Lion King by implying that all the animals are OKAY with a predator/prey arrangement doesn't make it any less disturbing.)

And then ... wait, he's got the little firebird? Shouldn't that go back to the parents?

What were they thinking?

Not that MLP hasn't been entirely lacking in uncomfortable moments before. This isn't the first time that "stalking your friends is okay." And then there was that episode with the cowboy-horses and their conflict with the buffalo stampede grounds, which really struck me as ... awkward at best.

The show is still adorable, but I wish they'd be a little more careful about the (presumably) unintentional morals.

Oh yeah, I thought I should add in -- Gwendel actually reacted first to the "hey, wait a minute!" with Spyke keeping the baby firebird, and with the weirdness of "Spyke rejects his dragonhood!" as a moral, before I did. Figured I should note that out of all fairness. (Plus, I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm some strange "brony" who watches MLP alone. That would be weird. ;) )
