After much pondering, I finally decied to color Limit's mane and tail, shading gradually from white roots to deep blue tips. (A variant [livejournal.com profile] the_vulture suggested, that I'd been considering after posting the poll). I also tied up his mane to make the mane less overwhelming on the right side. He looks pretty similar from the left side, but on the right the change is pronounced. I also varnished him to protect the paint job, so he's glossy now, which is more glaring in some of these photos than it is in person.

The gradiant on the tail and mane worked out nicely!

I'm glad that idea worked well. And the shiny kinda works; those bright highlights actually add to the visual dynamic. They could use some toning down in the photos, though, maybe with less direct lighting and a tripod to hold the camera steady for a longer exposure. That way, you'll get the dark blue richness back.

The white ribbon is a cute touch. :)

Edited for clarification.

Stool and/or a stack of books?

Yeah, lighting can be tough, but even that can be remedied. You can use thin paper to diffuse direct lighting (just don't attach it directly to the light), use mirrors (or aluminum foil) to bounce it at the ceiling to get more ambient light, or shoot in daylight, using a stool/stack of books as tripod so you can shoot with a longer exposure (needing less light), if there isn't enough daylight.

(How can you tell I was an art student once? XD )

And, wow, does the colour contrast between that emblem and the rest('cutie spot' you call it?) ever make it seem to glow!

Nice gradient effect! I had voted for just leaving it white, but this turned out really nice!

Gradient blue does look sky-y, though.

Just remember, one of the key to the success of an art piece is recognizing when it's time to stop fussing with it. :) I'm just really, really glad that the dye job turned out well; I imagine you would've really disappointed if taking that last risk had turned out poorly.
