My job makes me schedule in January all of my vacation days for the year; this year I arranged it so I'd have at least one day off every month (either vacation or holiday). I'd picked Monday off, but switched it to today because "Sucker Punch" was coming out.

Lut and I have been planning to see this movie since watching the trailer months ago. [livejournal.com profile] bradhicks described it as "Things the Internet Likes: The Movie". To expand on that a little more: it's the best excuse I've ever seen to have beautiful scantily-clad young women engage in anime-style combat against bad guys. Yes, the narrative does justify the over-the-top action. It's still an excuse, mind, but it's an excuse that makes sense in context, which is saying something.

The action sequences are gorgeous and well-choreographed. The storyline held my interest, but as one of my friends put it: "I like a little story with my fan service", and that's what you're getting. A lot of fan service, a little story.

Lut pointed out that, as fan service goes, it is oddly sanitized. There is no nudity, little if any profanity, and while there's lots of stylized violence, the vast majority of it is against robots, zombies, and monsters: there's very little actual bloodshed. When there is blood, it's for a narrative purpose. The film was put together thougtfully, with a lot of attention to detail.

I had a good time, and so did Lut. I'd recommend the movie, although if I think too hard about it there are some elements that were pretty disturbing.

Ooh, disturbing?

I kinda want to see it but I've been pretty meh on seeing movies lately.

I'm so glad you liked it. I had a great time, but with all the eviscerating reviews going around I worry that maybe I should feel guilty about my discovery that there is a very poignant, thoughtful, and deeply symbolic story being told underneath those layers of abstraction.

Most folks down here in the bay who've seen it have unanimously poo-pooed the film, saying it's a mindlessly violent, incoherent film lacking any plot and "Heavy Metal"-esque style variation in quality and production value. =P

That being said, I don't listen to other people's reviews for a film and I want to go see the movie anyway because there's nothing wrong with mindlessly violent artistically stunning films in my mind, and I usually take away a completely different idea from movies than other people. Plus it sounds like something interesting to talk to you about. =D

I'm sure I'll like it, I usually don't go see films I won't like. ;D And I've been waiting for this one for a long time.

Hmmm, odd. All the reviews I saw for this absolutely *trashed* it!

Saw it. Just got back. Went to see it for the "live action anime," anachronistic pretty CGI, etc. Was not disappointed in that.

Squirmed through the "exploitation movie" segments that went on a bit too long for my taste; why did we essentially get two exploitation scenarios in one, neither of which was more appealing than the other? (Writer couldn't decide on which way to have scummy guys abusing pretty young girls, so he went with both?) Briefly argued/discussed with two friends about "what really happened," but most of that element just became a poor comparison to certain other, fairly recent movies. Wasn't certain what to think of the jumbled anachronisms sprinkled throughout the movie. Not sure if there was much point to my arguing/discussing with friends about "what really happened" in the movie, since it may just not really be meant to matter.

Not sure what else to say on it while sticking to vague generalities, without veering into spoileriffic territory.

I'll be curious to find out if it's the same as my theory.
