Feralan and hCevian

For my art project this weekend, I ended up trying to do an icon for Feralan and hCevian from sythyry. It's a huge portrait thing because somehow I cannot ever draw an icon at any size within an order of magnitude of actual icon size. I am now sick of working on it, so I'm giving up.

I wanted to do hCevian (the sea urchin thing on Feralan's shoulder) in black, but at icon size he looks like Feralan's hair or something. So I ended up making him more blue. Now it looks like Feralan has spiky blue hair at icon size. Sigh. Right, giving up.

Maybe if you made him larger, so that he could only sit on Ferelan's shoulder with a few of his spikes sticking clear through the boy's head? n.n

I am really not good enough to pull that off. Illustrating weird things that the viewer doesn't expect is much harder to make look right. As opposed to 'like the artist didn't know what she was doing'. :/

Well, when I look at the icon, hCevian doesn't look like Feralan's hair. Of course, if I didn't know the context, I'd wonder why there's a sea urchin on the raccoon's shoulder.

I'm not sure what I can do about the missing context. I think it just has to look weird if you don't know what hCevian is (or what it looks like). n_n

There isn't anything, that I can think of, that you can do about the context; I was just trying to convey that I think the icon works. ^_^

I like the hands. They look a lot like the ones my rats have, which I imagine is like racoon's hands. :)
