On the outside of my left index finger, at the base where the finger joins the hand, I have a small narrow callous, perhaps half an inch long. It's faint, only just perceptible to touch and nearly invisible.
Callouses form under the repetition of behaviors that wear or tear at the skin, like walking barefoot regularly, or practicing on a stringed instrument with your fingers.
This one was caused by the lip on 2-liter bottles of Diet Coke, which I hold by the neck in my left hand as I pour into the cup steadied by my right.
