On the outside of my left index finger, at the base where the finger joins the hand, I have a small narrow callous, perhaps half an inch long. It's faint, only just perceptible to touch and nearly invisible.

Callouses form under the repetition of behaviors that wear or tear at the skin, like walking barefoot regularly, or practicing on a stringed instrument with your fingers.

This one was caused by the lip on 2-liter bottles of Diet Coke, which I hold by the neck in my left hand as I pour into the cup steadied by my right.

...

It's possible that I drink too much soda.

You're evolving to become the perfect soda consumer. Why stop now? :)

It's due to the diet cola! You should get rid of that nasty diet stuff and drink the real stuff...

Sugar cola is heavier because there's more mass of sugar dissolved in it; I don't know about the new "splenda" or whatever the name for sucralose is, but aspartame they used so little of that containers of diet would float and regular would sink :)

My only concern....

would be to try and get a sense if your stomach is getting damaged; high intakes of carbonated drinks can put wear and tear on it. if you're drinking coke for the most part (as I recall) , I'd talk to your doctor about anti-ostreoperosis measures, though, because the phosphoric acid leeches calcium from your bones

I know what the problem is...

Your glass isn't big enough. You need to get one of those 64-ounce tumblers from the gas station, so you don't have to pour as often.
