If they really had to chisel them out, then I suppose they would be broken up! No wonder recovery has been such a pain. My own old tooth had to be excavated as well, since the doctor said my bones were 'extra hard'. My wisdom teeth came out relatively early though, and I was knocked out for that operation (I think I was 16).
