Look into the T-Mobile sidekick. It's a phone, email, AIM, web browser, and maybe in a couple months it'll let you logon to Mucks with it. jadedfox had one, and I used it on the drive to Philadelphia, and it stayed connected about 60% of the time.
You type with your thumbs. I don't think much writing could be done with it, but in terms of writing ease, it was slightly better than my (now dead) Palm III. Which is to say, it was still not really all that great.
