While it definitely just sounds like bad design, I also can't shake the feeling that maybe there is A Good Reason for it not already having one - maybe it's possible to somehow lock yourself up there? I dunno.
Regardless, it could be a good idea to solve it now, while you're needing to go up there frequently, so it doesn't become a minor-but-constant irritant/mental block later, when you need to go up there less.
