Vacuum everything with a floor, daily if you can. The flea larvae love to be on the floor -- in an unfinished basement, we could see them wiggling around on the ground -- and if you can nail that, it's better than trying to break the cycle at the adults that may well lay eggs before they die. Also, cat fleas WILL go after humans if they're hungry.
We had a central-vacuum at the time, and added flea powder to be vacuumed up after we'd done the basement.
If you have a bare-floor basement? Vacuum that as well. Like I said, they will happily wiggle around on concrete if they don't have carpet.
