Wisteria: "What an intriguing notion. In Newlant, neither women nor men typically wear makeup. My childhood effort employed watercolors and was inspired by a clown's performance from a troupe visiting Gladeton from abroad. I know the some other cultures use rather dramatic face-paint for intimidation during war, and some performing troupes use it to exaggerate expression while on stage. In Southern Vandu, men and women of the upper class would wear dark makeup about the eyes, often in elaborate patterns. I do not actually know if any cultures use makeup in such a subtle way that one might not notice it. It strikes me that I personally would be unlikely to notice a subtle effect through direct observation; only if it is mentioned in the course of conversation, as it has been here and when I lived in Southern Vandu."
