Today after my root canal I read the last few pages of Unknown Ajax, then read Further Arrangements and enjoyed it greatly. Thank you! I won't say anything specific because of spoilers for anyone who hasn't read it yet, but I really liked all three stories. (Also, the root canal went well. I have an amazing dentist.)

Always glad to hear about someone's root canal going well - I recall being unable to sleep before my first one, such terror stories are out there about them, but I think I've had five or six so far and they've all been mostly smooth sailing. My endodontist told me that most of the bad ones are because the patient left things until the tooth was in pretty bad shape, so not waiting until things started to really hurt has a lot to do with the improving the overall experience of the procedure. My previous dentist was somewhat of the opinion that painkillers should be used as little as possible, so I actually started to prefer the endodontist because I knew the latter wouldn't mess around with not numbing the area up enough.

Re: Google Play?

Google Play has issues, unfortunately. Google Play has a contract that allows the seller to set a price, and Google Play will pay royalties on that price, but they will actually charge whatever they feel like. $0.10, for example. Which you think "well, that's fine, as long as my cut doesn't drop." Except that Amazon will pricematch the $0.10, and they WILL drop your cut to 3 cents. (Or delist your book entirely, potentially.) For me, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and iTunes combined account for maybe 3% of sales. The other 97%: Amazon.

So having Amazon drop my price to near-zero because of some random thing Google Play is doing would be pretty bad for my bottom line. -_-

I do know authors who've managed to list in Google Play successfully by weird measures, such as putting in a price of like $50 that Google Play drops to something reasonable.

But it'd mean setting up a Google Play distributor account and keeping that updated, for what'd probably be, at most, a few sales a month. Also, non-Amazon sales drop off sharply post-launch. This suggests to me that people buy from other outlets because (a) they heard about the book from me or someone else and (b) they have an Amazon aversion. So adding another non-Amazon outlet probably means a few sales that would be on Kobo/Nook/iTunes would now be on Google Play, as opposed to someone new finding me via Google Play.

I don't want to be an Amazon-only author: I am not keen on having my entire career as an author hinged on a single company. It is anyway, but I am willing to give up some Amazon-only advantages in return for doing my meagre best to get them some competition. But Google Play has not yet cleared the threshhold of being both fairly easy and harmless to place my book on. :|

Not to thread-jack too much, but I thought this was so cool (although inconvenient) when I learned it: my dentist told me that infection changes the PH of the gum tissues, and that makes the painkillers less effective! I had no idea. I had asked her about the reputation root canals have of being so painful, and she said it's a mixture of the aforementioned issue with the PH, plus the attitude a lot of dentists used to have toward painkillers--like your previous dentist.

And if we had Blessed among us we wouldn't need dentists, but we do, so I'm happy I have such a good one. :-)

I didn't know either until I started investigating distributors for A Rational Arrangement! haikujaguar first explained it to me, and I've seen a number of authors since then lamenting it. I am very sad about it, because I like Google Play as an e-reader myself. Once alinsa turns a book into an e-pub and I start proofing the e-book, I do it in Google Play. It has a great feature where it will syncs comments made in Google Play with a Google Doc, so I can share that doc with Alinsa and she can make corrections from it, without me having to copy-paste anything anywhere. This is in addition to Google Play auto-syncing my e-books across account platforms.
