I'm familiar with the spoon metaphor, though I don't think I've talked about it on LJ. The original spoon metaphor, IIRC, was more about how physical activities able-bodied people took for granted, like "getting out of bed" and "getting dressed", took up energy, and the writer's disability meant she had so little energy that this was a measurable amount.
But I think in the common usage around the net, spoons does get used as a metaphor for mental energy and running out of it, yeah.
