This is, by the way, pretty much spot-on. :) There's a certain 'dominance' component as well -- something subtle in Aunbrel's demeanor makes him read as 'dominant' to the viper-dragons. Coupled with his persistence and refusal to back down on their terms, they're forced to either hurt him (which would be a crime) or accept him as a protector/leader. Which, as he points out, he has some legitimate claim to. :)
