I was wondering about that, in this case particularly. Was Nabokov able to destroy the book himself, or was he still hoping to finish it and therefore didn't want to? Was he too weak to do it himeself by the time he asked his wife to do it? I don't know. I do know it's not something that'd always be feasible -- a lot of people die suddenly and with no warning or opportunity to prepare. :(
