It kind of reminds me of conmen. I think maybe part of why Americans romanticize conmen is that many cons take advantage of the victim's greed or selfishness. I don't mind those sorts of crimes nearly as much as ones that prey on generosity and kindness. I don't want those traits to be weeded out by predation!
