I had been wondering, idly, off and on, what mastodon and the fediverse was for ... wow, years now, but as I never managed to actually find the content I was looking for, I never seriously bothered with it. Now I know how it's supposed to work, so thank you for this post. Sadly, it seems mookbook has become the platform of choice for the arts industry in my immediate area. I have also, remarkably, managed to find kind and helpful people in groups there, so I'm not going to prioritise looking into whether there's a 'local community' for me in the fediverse. But, forewarned is forearmed, and this post will help if/when I choose to switch platforms.
