Art: Nightmare Sleeping
Sep. 4th, 2006 02:20 pmI haven't felt much like writing this weekend, so I've been working on art instead. I feel vaguely guilty for not having done any writing. A whole three-day weekend with no plans, and all I have to show for it is one picture.
On the bright side, at least it's a picture I like. This is an extreme rarity for me. Even more rare: it's a picture that I like and that I didn't do for someone else. The last two pictures I've done that I liked would be the picture I did for
sythyry in trade for a very cool pottery bowl, and the commission I did for
oceansedge for Chrismas 2004. Yes, it's been over a year and a half since I last did a piece of art with which I was genuinely happy. Click the image for the full-size version.

But I like this one. I like it so much, in fact, that I'm thinking of doing another picture using the same basic composition but with a different color scheme. Perhaps a more modestly-dressed unicorn facing left. Things I'd like to do differently: add in a nightstand and perhaps another object or two, to emphasize that the floor is reflective. Fix the pewter sheets (I'd meant for the sheets to be white, in fact, but I messed them up rather badly -- the one thing about this picture I'm really not happy with). I also regret that there wasn't enough room on the page to capture the full sweep of her wings.
The original is a tasteful nude (no naughty bits); I painted the top on digitally so's I wouldn't need to cut-tag it. I prefer the original; I think the top makes the sheet over her legs look too much like it's a skirt. Original is here, for those of you unperturbed by nude figures. :)
