I'm glad the outline's gone to your satisfaction. I remember the outline for my attempt at a novel and it is what gave me focus and a sense of destination. On the other hand, I didn't really "tell the outline of the story to myself" so it had less usefulness to me. It was more like decreeing "well, this SHOULD happen, it sounds like a good idea...." and stringing all the decrees together.
