It does seem to be worst with comics. Other entertainment forms are allowed to die, while a successful comic usually continues on even after its creator's passing. (For example: Little Orphan Annie, which I believe originated in the 1930s.)
A friend of mine offered an interesting explanation for the Bond phenomenon: "James Bond, Agent 007" isn't a person, but rather, a job description. The original James Bond (Connery) retired, and the various others since have been awarded the name because they were especially good at their jobs, and it was a way of keeping the legend alive and scaring the enemy. Sort of the "Dread Pirate Roberts" syndrome. :)
