I Bet You Wish You Had a Weekend This Good
I had such a good weekend. It was so good I don't even much mind being back at work.
I came up with a short story idea on Friday night and wrote it out on Friday and Saturday. It was so much fun actually finishing a story -- quickly! -- that I keep thinking "I should come up with another short story idea so I can do it again." I don't know that I will, but I'm thinking about it.
I wrote the short story because of a contest
level_head had told me about. I wasn't intending to actually enter it, because you had to be a member of SFNovelists to enter. They're a "hard SF" writing group, and I don't generally write science fiction at all, much less hard sf. But Level Head assured me that it wouldn't be that bad, and I decided to give it a try. After all, the book I almost started work on, "Hope", is a hard sf concept. I don't know how that will work out yet. They added me on Saturday night, but I haven't had any interaction with the group so far. Apparently, the summer months are slow, and about all that's happening right now is the short story contest.
In addition, I emailed the story to
jordangreywolf, because he was saying that he'd like to do a "webcomic", but he wants to illustrate a short story, not an ongoing series. Something he can start and then finish without investing years into it. (Can't blame him for that.) Since the story I'd written was just 3,000 words, I figured it might fit the bill nicely. He reacted positively, so maybe that'll be happening sometime in the future. Woo-hoo!
In addition, Lut and I did some fun things this weekend. I'll keep the details on some of those to myself :) but I will say that we went to see X-Men 2, which was fun in a don't-think-too-hard sort of way. I think I preferred the second to the first, in fact, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the first. I continue to be amazed by what a good job they did casting Professor Xavier and Magneto. Though watching Jean Grey and Logan together was strange. At one point, I leaned over and whispered to Lut, "Is Jean too short or Logan too tall? Logan's too tall, right?" Lut rather thought they were both off for height. But a minor issue, really.
Sunday, we went out for breakfast. We were going to go to Antioch Park to read -- the weather was gorgeous -- but I wasn't feeling well after breakfast, so we went home. I took a nap and felt better afterwards, then typed up some emails for the "Trust Me" game. Got some good ideas back from the rest of the GM team, so that looks promising, too.
Ooo, and I almost forgot: Level Head did a line-by-line critique of the story. The surest way to a writer's heart: talk about her writing. Especially in great detail. Or at least, it's the surest way to this writer's heart. Ah, bliss.
Even work can't get me down now. Whee!

I await the next draft with interest. The Lady Anne has not seen any version of this yet, as you've not sent one with the first round cleanups.
Best wishes!

I am still deciding if I am going to make any further changes to the story. I haven't had any inspirations yet. If I don't have any by Wednesday, I'll send out the latest for your Lady's input.

Thanks for thinking of me.
Be good,
The Lady, Anne

I'm sure Greywolf will be happy to show off his product, if/when he gets a chance to illustrate it. He's pretty busy with some commissions that he's still working on, and I don't know if he'll actually decided to do this, ultimately, or not. He's currently writing up a dream that he's forcing into "story" mode, and it's a fascinating read. I wouldn't be surprised if he opted to illustrate that, instead. :)
