Status check -- anyone out there who plans to read A Night in the Lonesome October, but hasn't been able to yet? If so, please let me know where you are (ordered a copy but haven't received it yet, started but haven't finished it, etc.)

It's a book by Roger Zelazny that I'm thinking of using as the seed for a campaign. I mentioned it here, last Sunday.

Er, no. I'm encouraging players to read the book. The campaign will only use the same general background, not the exact problems faced in the book.

Ahh no, I haven't. I just found it curious, as my mother just recommended the Richard Layman to me last week :) I suppose I should add it to my 'should read' list

The title must be a literary reference; no real similarity between the two works. (Well, they both have elements of horror and the fantastic, but that's about it.)

Is Zelzeny the one that everyone says is nuts? Or is that Piers Anthony? I can never remember.

That would be Piers Anthony. I haven't heard anything negative about Roger Zelazny. Sadly, Zelazny passed away a few years ago. Zelazny is best known for his Amber books (beginning with Nine Princes in Amber.) Piers Anthony is best known for his Xanth book. I would not recommend reading Piers Anthony books to anyone over the age of sixteen

Zelazny is a good writer, but I haven't liked that much of his stuff, incidentally. I'm not saying he's bad, just not usually to my taste. A Night in the Lonesome October, however, was terrific. A true pleasure to read.

No harm in asking! It's not like I recognize all the references to films and books that you make. Nobody expects you to know every SF author, or what rumors go with which one. :)

I've ordered a copy but have not heard anything about it since the email acknowledging my order (in theory, they were supposed to ship on the 18th).
