The handle is a cabinet-style knob: there's no door latch and no way for it to accidentally lock AFAICT.
I don't need to go in there frequently even now. I've been in there once since posting this. I am not sure how it could be a minor-but-constant irritant when it hardly ever matters? I suppose I could put a handle on it but I am unlikely to ask my friend to do it, because he lives 35 minutes away. I always go to them because their house is much better for entertaining.
