When Gabriel is in control, Damon is a voice in the back of Gabriel's mind, sometimes silent, often supplying running sarcastic commentary. Damon is only guaranteed quiet if Gabriel is healing or protecting someone. Damon remembers everything that Gabriel does while Gabriel is in control.
When Damon is in control, Gabriel is usually completely absent from Damon's conscious awareness. Occasionally Gabriel 'wakes up' in a kind of empty 'heaven', made of fluffy white cloud-castles, pearly gates, blue sky above, with harp music and background angels running around. From there, he can yell at Damon and Damon can hear him. Sometimes Damon will manifest in the 'heaven', or open a 'scrying window' that he'll show things to Gabriel through -- not necessarily things that are actually happening. If someone gets hurt in the real world, Gabriel will sense it -- he'll 'wake up' in the 'heaven' if he was asleep, and the gates around the 'heaven' start to crack. Gabriel will charge for the weakened gates and try to break out. (This usually works, although not if whoever's hurt is in that state because Damon is fighting them). Gabriel is NOT aware of what Damon does while Damon is in control, apart from some instances where Damon specifically shows him an event. Sometimes Gabriel doesn't even remember those.
They can't stand each other, so about the only 'rules' they both observe regarding his body is 'don't get yourself killed or maimed' and 'keep in training condition'. He doesn't really have to exercise -- the bioforce effect keeps his body in excellent physical condition -- but he does benefit from muscle memory for combat maneuvers and suchlike.
